SGP Pakistan - Sixth Operational Phase (OP6)
The Sixth phase of the Pakistan Small Grants Programme seeks to build resilience through community action, while recognizing the inter-connectedness of ecosystem services, local food production, natural resource use, livelihoods and culture. As such, the project supports community-based organizations, which are the driving force in rural development strategies, to take the lead in managing natural resources sustainably for social and ecological resilience and global environmental benefits, and in concert with other stakeholders and communities to multiply results.
The project integrates the landscape approach in the Indus Delta, by focusing 40% of GEF financing on this area. The landscape provides a limited geographic scope in which small grants and their results can accrue to generate broader global environmental benefits. The project also targets 40% of its funding to other sites in the country, particularly to biodiversity hotspots, and 20% of its financing to testing and disseminating innovations in the area of energy efficient technologies.
UNOPS supports the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme that helps protect poor, remote villages from the serious effects of climate change and environmental degradation. In an effort to support community-led initiatives, UNOPS efficiently channels direct grants to help communities cope with climate change, conserve biodiversity, protect international waters, reduce the impact of persistent organic pollutants, prevent land degradation, and adopt sustainable forest management practices.
