Tawila Dam Rehabilitation - Diminishing Conflict Through Early Recovery Water Supply Program (DCERWSP) (Award ID 00062521)
This project aims to rehabilitate Tawila Dam in North Darfur, which is a major surface water source to local IDPs and their livelihood activities.
Tawila has a population of more than 50,000 people, predominantly IDPs. The dam was constructed in 1954 by the State Water Corporation and is located about 70 km West of El Fasher, near Tawila Township. A key feature of the dam is an earthen embankment (1.8km long) across the wadi, with two spillway structures. As per the State Water Corporation sources, the design capacity of the reservoir is 300,000 cubic metres, however it has lost a significant amount of storage volume due to silt accumulation. As a result, the dam is no longer able to retain wadi flow during the wet season. The loss of dam water storage capacity has reduced the potential for groundwater recharge; this negatively impacted on the access to water of surrounding communities increasing the potential for water related conflicts. The surrounding communities are experiencing increased hardship in living conditions and reduced income generation from agricultural activities. The State Government has indicated that Tawila is one of their key focus areas for the settlement of voluntary returnees. So far, the lack of water has heavily undermined the number of voluntary returns to the area.
The first stage of the programme comprised of two initial social, environmental and sustainability impact assessments, namely assessing the potential rehabilitations of Haluf Dam and Tawila Dam respectively. Based on the findings of these assessments, USAID committed to funding of one of the proposed dam rehabilitations.

Road Drainage Structure
Under The 2011 “Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD)” and guided by the Darfur Development Strategy, UNOPS Sudan is embarking on an intervention to rehabilitate the road infrastructure in selected areas in the five states of Darfur and building sub-surface dams. These two projects are expected to provide over half a million inhabitants in Darfur access to improved basic services through the rehabilitation of the five rural states road infrastructure and installing sub-surface dams in three states to provide clean and sustainable drinking water.

NRM 2 - Natural Resources Management Livelihood Project in East Darfur State
The proposed project “The Natural Resource Management for Sustainable Livelihoods in East Darfur” (NRMP2) aims at improved livelihoods for 55,000 people (mainly farmers and pastoralists) through more productive and sustainable management of natural resources. Poor natural resource governance, combined with the region's on-going political conflict, most forcefully drive the environment-livelihoods disequilibrium in East Darfur. UNOPS is project managing the project, including building of three new water infrastructures providing sustainable and conflict free supply, to improve local level access to clean water and knowledge, technology leading to sustainable and productive livelihoods.

Mine Action in Support of the United Nations – African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) 2018-2019 AB
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) focuses its activities in Darfur in:
• Providing coordination, technical advice and assistance to the National Mine Action Center (NMAC), UN entities, and partners;
• Reducing the number of deaths and casualties caused by mines/ explosive remnants of war among the Sudanese population and humanitarian field workers through clearance operations, survey, explosive remnants of war / mine risk education and assistance to the victims of landmines and explosive remnants of war;
• Serving as the UN focal point and sub sector lead for Mine Action;
• Facilitating mine action through resource mobilization and support to implementation;
• Strengthening the capacity of the National Mine Action Center to deliver quality assurance and project management resulting in increased national ownership.
In addition to the provision of technical assistance, UNMAS and its supporting partners implement humanitarian assistance initiatives that support the safe return of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs). These initiatives help create a more secure and stable environment from which Sudan will be able to recommence essential economic activities in the affected areas. UNMAS draws upon project management services from UNOPS for implementation of its field operations.

Mine Action in Support of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei 18-19
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS ) in the disputed Abyei Area, which straddles northern and southern Sudan and has been claimed by both sides, delivers non-technical surveys, explosive ordnance disposal, area clearance and route assessment activities enable peacekeeping operations, the delivery of humanitarian aid, the return of community members to previously abandoned communities and a peaceful migration by nomadic herdsmen.
UNMAS also delivers mine risk education to United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) personnel, enhancing their knowledge on what to do should they encounter items of explosive remnants of war while conducting operations. Similar messages are delivered to communities within the Abyei Area.
UNMAS Patrol Support teams deploy together with the Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism (JBVMM) teams to allow Joint Border Verification and Monitoring Mechanism ground patrols to move freely and protected against any explosive hazards that are encountered in the Safe Demilitarized Border Zone.

Sudan USAID VTF - Mine Risk Education and Victim Assistance Support
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Sudan offers mine risk education and victim assistance, as mine accidents often take place out of lack of knowledge. UNMAS provides risk education especially to populations living with the threat of explosives, and humanitarian workers. UNMAS also supports victims of landmines or explosive remnants of war through provision of socioeconomic and psychological assistance, and uses the Information Management System for Mine Action as a tool to register the victims.
UNMAS draws upon project management services from UNOPS for implementation of its field operations.

Stenghtening the humanitarian mine action response in Sudan 2019 VTF Italy
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) in Sudan offers mine risk education and victim assistance, as mine accidents often take place out of lack of knowledge. UNMAS provides risk education especially to populations living with the threat of explosives, and humanitarian workers. UNMAS also supports victims of landmines or explosive remnants of war through provision of socioeconomic and psychological assistance, and uses the Information Management System for Mine Action as a tool to register the victims.
