Assisting stabilisation and humanitarian efforts with explosive hazard management to enable civilians to return to retaken areas in Iraq (Germany EHM VTF 17-18)
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) programme in Iraq works through multiple entry points to implement and support explosive threat mitigation activities. Under UN senior leadership, UNMAS Iraq liaises closely with authorities at central, governorate and district levels.
The programme focuses on enabling humanitarian and stabilization interventions to support the safe and dignified return of internally displaced persons to areas previously under ISIL control. This specifically includes the following priority areas:
- Provide explosive hazard management response in support of humanitarian and stabilization efforts
- Deliver risk education at the community level and national/regional level
- Enhance Government entities’ capacity to manage, regulate and coordinate an explosive hazard management response.
This part of the programme is project managed by UNOPS, funded by The Government of Germany UNMAS through the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action (UN VTF). The purpose of the UN VTF is to support a coherent multilateral humanitarian response to risks posed by mines and explosive remnants of war.

UK Support to Iraq (DFID)
This part of the programme is project managed by UNOPS, funded by The Government of United Kingdom to UNMAS through the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Assistance in Mine Action (UN VTF). The purpose of the UN VTF is to support a coherent multilateral humanitarian response to risks posed by mines and explosive remnants of war.
