Preventing Casualties Through Life-Saving Mine Action Activities in Benghazi - UNMAS Libya CERF project 2018
In order to respond to urgent needs on the ground that were established in close cooperation with local authorities as well as with the Libyan Mine Action Centre, The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) Libya carries out survey and clearance activities in selected high-impact areas in Benghazi. On the one hand, the project strives to save lives by enhancing the safe movement of conflict affected populations (including IDPs, refugees and host communities) as well as to enable their access to vital services and infrastructure. On the other hand, by ascertaining whether or not an area is contaminated by explosives, and by removing explosive hazards the projects aims to enable safe access for other humanitarian partners to areas and communities that would otherwise be off limits.
Operating in Libya since March 2011 and integrated into United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), UNMAS Libya works to save lives by eliminating the threat of mines, explosive remnants of war and other explosive hazards, coordinating mine action activities, and facilitating safe access for Libyans, the United Nations and humanitarian actors in Libya.
The project is funded by the United Nations global emergency response fund (CERF), which enables humanitarian responders to deliver life-saving assistance whenever and wherever crises strike. CERF’s window for Underfunded Emergencies helps scale-up and sustain protracted relief operations to avoid critical gaps when no other funding is available. UNMAS implements the project through the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
