Mine Action in Western Sahara (East of the Berm) - GFFO VTF 2016 - 2018
Both sides of the 1,465 km berm that divides the Territory of Western Sahara remain heavily contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) as a result of 16 years of conflict. Explosive hazards continue to endanger the lives of both UN military personnel who monitor the ceasefire, international personnel who provide logistical support east of the berm, as well as the vulnerable nomadic and local populations and their livestock on which they are very dependent.
UNMAS, with UNOPS support, provides local, nomadic and refugee populations with the knowledge necessary to stay safe in environments where landmines and ERW are present. Since January 2017, UNMAS is also enhancing its victim assistance efforts through a livestock income-generating and project which provides socio-economic rehabilitation and reintegration opportunities for survivors of landmine accidents. Furthermore, UNMAS supports capacity enhancement initiatives for its local mine action partner, SMACO and local victim assistance organization ASAVIM.
The governments of Germany and Spain are contributing to the UNMAS programmes in Western Sahara through the Voluntary Trust Fund. The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) programme “Mine Action in Western Sahara (East of the Berm)" is managed by UNOPS.

Mine Action in Support of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) 2019-2020 AB
Both sides of the 1,465 km (out of 2,700 km) berm dividing the Territory of Western Sahara remain significantly contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war as a result of the armed conflict from 1975 until 1991, between the Royal Moroccan Army and the Frente POLISARIO Military Forces. These explosive hazards continue to endanger the lives of local nomads, daily activities in settlements, as well as the livestock on which they are dependent, United Nations military observers monitoring the ceasefire and humanitarian workers.
UNMAS operates as a component of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). UNMAS in the Territory of Western Sahara serves as the United Nations focal point for mine action related activities within the MINURSO area of operations. UNMAS has also reduced the threat posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war by conducting humanitarian mine clearance, stockpile destructions, RE, capacity enhancement and by providing assistance to survivors of mine accidents.
UNMAS draws upon project management services from UNOPS for implementation of its field operations.
