20114 Improving quality of learning through provision of sustainable renewable energy in primary and middle schools in selected districts of KP province, Pakistan
In Pakistan, a lack of basic facilities in government schools contributes to low enrolment and high dropout rates – a problem that is especially severe in remote areas.
UNOPS, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) aim to change this. On 13 February 2018, the three organizations signed an agreement to implement a project that will use solar energy to improve education.
As part of the project, nearly 2,000 government schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province will be fitted with off-grid solar power systems that will provide a renewable, sustainable source of electricity. More than 700 of these schools are girls’ schools with a total enrolment of more than 81,000.
The project targets schools in seven of the province’s most underserved districts: Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Hangu, Karak, Kohat, Lakki Marwat and Tank.
With about $8.5 million worth of joint support from DFID and SFD, UNOPS implements the project in partnership with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department.

SGP Pakistan - Sixth Operational Phase (OP6)
The Sixth phase of the Pakistan Small Grants Programme seeks to build resilience through community action, while recognizing the inter-connectedness of ecosystem services, local food production, natural resource use, livelihoods and culture. As such, the project supports community-based organizations, which are the driving force in rural development strategies, to take the lead in managing natural resources sustainably for social and ecological resilience and global environmental benefits, and in concert with other stakeholders and communities to multiply results.
The project integrates the landscape approach in the Indus Delta, by focusing 40% of GEF financing on this area. The landscape provides a limited geographic scope in which small grants and their results can accrue to generate broader global environmental benefits. The project also targets 40% of its funding to other sites in the country, particularly to biodiversity hotspots, and 20% of its financing to testing and disseminating innovations in the area of energy efficient technologies.
UNOPS supports the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme that helps protect poor, remote villages from the serious effects of climate change and environmental degradation. In an effort to support community-led initiatives, UNOPS efficiently channels direct grants to help communities cope with climate change, conserve biodiversity, protect international waters, reduce the impact of persistent organic pollutants, prevent land degradation, and adopt sustainable forest management practices.

Infrastructure for the Enhancement of Gender Equality and Rule of Law
To improve women’s participation in public sector jobs, the Government of Pakistan has set a 10% quota for women in the police force. Despite the government’s efforts to increase female representation, the current percentage of women in the police force remains below 2%. Additionally, most of these women are at the Constable level, with very few at Superintendent Positions.
While the government has taken steps to increase the recruitment of women in its police force, these positive developments have been limited by a shortage of space for new female recruits at police training colleges.
In order to address this concern and enhance gender equality in the police, the United States Embassy’s International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section (INL) in Pakistan has partnered with UNOPS to implement a project to expand facilities that accommodate female police personnel and create an enabling environment for them. Under this project UNOPS intends to construct a three storey building for 100 women police personnel at training center at Shiekhupura.

Realizing the importance of women in law enforcement, the Sindh Government has taken practical steps to increase the recruitment of women in its police force. These positive developments are limited by a shortage of space to accommodate new female recruits at the police training colleges in Sindh.

The major outputs of this project are the construction of two hostel facilities for female trainees in Sindh province
