UNMAS support for Libyan Mine Action Centre – Destruction of Explosive Remanants of War
In order to reduce the threat of death and injury to the residential population and clearance teams, the Libyan Mine Action Centre (LibMAC) requested assistance in destroying the remainder of Explosive remnants of war stockpile, located close to a residential area. The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) Libya oversees the clearance of the unexploded ordnance destruction in Libya, seeks to enhance the capacities of 12 Libyan personnel in safely handling explosive remnants of war and to destroy the remaining tonnes of explosive remnants of war. UNMAS implements the project through the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Mine Action in Support of the UNSMIL Mission in Libya 2019
With the direct support of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has continued to assist Libya in reducing the threat of improvised explosive devices and small-arms proliferation, light weapons and ammunition, through training and rallying international funding/assistance. With the help of a European Union planning cell, SID provides significant support to Libya’s security planning and decision-making (including the development of state forces) and efforts to navigate the UN arms embargo and associated exemptions processes.

UNMAS Support to the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) 2019-2020 through Capacity Enhancement for Local Community Gender-Based Awareness
Libya is contaminated with hundreds of thousands of explosive remnants of war that threaten the safety of civilians and aid workers. If these bombs are not properly managed, they could end up in the wrong hands, jeopardizing Libya's recovery and international security. The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is currently on the ground to help clear this threat.
UNMAS contributes to the achievement of United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) mandated objectives and those of the UN Country Team through Arms and Ammunition Advisory Role:
Unsafe and insecure storage of arms and ammunition, as well as their illicit proliferation, continues to pose a serious challenge to stabilization. As the Arms and Ammunition Advisory Section of UNSMIL, UNMAS completed the collection and disposal of approximately 200 tonnes of ERW from ammunition storage areas in Misrata in 2019; and provided technical advice, project management, and construction to prepare a field site in Gharyan for future liquid missile fuel disposal. To help mitigate the threat from improvised explosive devices, UNMAS trained Forensic Police in Device Scene Incident Management. Building on similar previous projects, UNMAS will carry out a series of trainings to empower Libyan women to deliver Small Arms and Light Weapons risk awareness to assist in strengthening community resilience and to help reduce gender-based violence.
UNMAS draws upon project management services from UNOPS for implementation of its field operations.

Procurement of Services for Financial Audit Review of the Central Bank of Libya in Tripoli and the Central Bank Branch in Bayda
Following Prime Minister Falez Serraj's request to the Security Council for support on a financial audit review of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) in Tripoli and the branch in Bayda on 10 July 2018, the Security Council issued a statement on 19 July 2018 mandating the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to provide assistance. A review was requested as a means of documenting that Libya's oil revenues have been collected in full, and to understand how Libya's foreign exchange reserves have been managed. This was meant to build confidence that oil (and other) revenues were being allocated fairly across the country.
UNOPS has been tasked with the procurement of services of a qualified independent international audit firm to conduct the financial audit review further. By promoting financial accountability, transparency and building trust in the banking system, the financial audit review will create conditions conducive to the political process in Libya. The objective of the audit review is to establish accountability and transparency for the way public funds and resources are managed

Mine Action in Support of the UNSMIL Mission in Libya
As a specialized service of the United Nations, the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS) works to eliminate the threat posed by mines, explosive remnants of war and improvised explosive devices by coordinating United Nations mine action, leading operational responses at the country level, and supporting the development of standards, policies, and norms.
UNMAS deployed to Libya in March 2011 and was integrated into the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) as the Arms and Ammunition Advisory Section in July 2012. UNMAS contributes to the achievement of UNSMIL mandated objectives and those of the UN Country Team through three pillars of activities: protection of civilians, arms and ammunition advisory role, capacity enhancement of national mine action actors.
UNOPS offers support to UNMAS in over 30 countries.
