Grant Management to for Green Climate Fund (GCF) in Indonesia
The Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness and Preparatory Programme supports National Designated Authorities to build climate management capacity.
Indonesia is the largest archipelago country with extensive tropical rainforests sustaining high biodiversity and carbon stock values. Indonesia high carbon rainforests hold critical value in tackling climate change. Long coastal lines and volcanic mountains enrich its islands with unique landscape, yet, expose them to potential natural disaster. About 90% of natural disaster in Indonesia is in the form of Hydrometeorology phenomenon (National Agency of Disaster Management, 2015). The risks and vulnerabilities of those occurrences can be exacerbated by climate change impacts in the future. Therefore, Indonesia is prone to the negative effects of climate change (First NDC Republic of Indonesia, 2016).
UNOPS supplies grant management support to the Green Climate Fund to improve resilience to climate change.

The Peat Restoration Agency (BRG) Results Enabling Facility in Indonesia
Seasonal peatland fires are compromising Indonesia’s economic and social development by creating considerable threats to health, the environment, and the economy. In 2015 peat fires and their related haze resulted in the hospitalization of more than half a million people due to acute respiratory infections. These fires that raged through 2.6 million hectares of forest and peatland areas in the islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra released 1.6 Gt of CO2e, surpassing the annual CO2 emissions of advanced industrialized nations such as Germany, France, and others.
Indonesia’s Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) has an important mandate: prevent forest fires, especially in peatland areas, as well as restore 2 million hectares of peatlands devastated by forest and land fires. The Agency identified 7 target provinces for peatland restoration and fire prevention activities in Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and Papua.
The Government of Norway and BRG have asked UNOPS to develop a flexible multiyear administrative support mechanism for managing Norway’s financial support to BRG through the establishment of the BRG Results Enabling Facility (BRG-REF). The mechanism has within its scope an Implementation Support Mechanism that focuses internally within BRG, providing a technical and advisory support mechanism aimed at strengthening BRG’s capacities to deliver on its mandate and operationalizing best practices and lessons learned in peatland assessments, restoration, and management.
